The band members have earned their stripes in various Dutch bands, including Jovink & The Voederbietels, The Bloody Honkies, The Backcorner Boogie Band, Automatic Sam, and Shaking Godspeed. Hilltop Howlers has a unique sound influenced by rootsy rock ‘n’ roll, psychedelic rock, and Britpop.

Lead singer Lawrence Mul: “Together with engineer/producer Rutger Drenth (Shaking Godspeed/De Niemanders/Komodo), we locked ourselves in a studio in the Belgian Ardennes for a week. We used an old-school recording process: we were all in the same room, with minimal overdubs, and vocals recorded almost immediately. The songs were mostly written beforehand, but we focused on finding the right vibe for each track.”
Guitarist and founding member Hendrik Jan Lovink adds: “Due to some lineup changes, the band’s sound has evolved compared to Gloria. The foundation remains rock ‘n’ roll, but we’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from alternative bands like Howlin’ Rain, Majestic Scene, and Claw Boys Claw.”
